In 2008, CARE launched its Market Engagement Strategy with a goal of empowering 10 million women and girls  to lift themselves out of poverty by 2015 by promoting dignified employment and sustainable incomes. As CARE  works towards this goal, we seek to promote changes in agricultural and other high-potential value chain that enhance industry competitiveness as well as the opportunities for and benefits the poor gain from market participation.

 

Market Engagement Case Studies series launched in 2010 provide in-depth analsys of our work in market engagement and value chain development. We hope these materials will foster further innovation and success as we continue to work toward equitable, sustainable and productive solutions to alleviate global poverty.

This CARE Market Engagement Innovations and Impacts Case Study features the experiences of CARE Kenya under the five-year Dak Achana Project. The case was selected for inclusion in the series due to its focus on food security, a growing area of priority across a range of CARE country office programs. Dak Achana applied a multi-dimensional approach to improving food security that included components on food for
work, VSLA, HIV/AIDS, agriculture and market engagement and water and sanitation. Emerging lessons have direct relevance to other CARE country offices and other actors looking to overcome food security constraints through integrated strategies that include market engagement.

This CARE Market Engagement Innovations and Impacts Case Study features the experience of CARE’s multi-year Tsunami Response Program (TRP) , which was launched in response to the devastating tsunami that hit the east coast of India in 2004. The case study documents TRP’s progression from immediate, humanitarian relief and short-term rehabilitation efforts to long-term economic development interventions focused on rebuilding the livelihoods of marginalized coastal communities. The case focuses explicitely on a value chain approach applied in the smallholder salt sector through which CARE improved smallholder productivity, processing capacity, and ability to mitigate risks while also enhancing market linkages and improving overall resilience in the chain. This case study provides practitioners and donors with an illustration of the potential for a value chain approach to reduce poverty and and social exclusion in a challenging, post-disaster environment.

This CARE Market Engagement Innovations and Impacts Case Study features the experiences of CARE Zambia under three-year, $3,000,000 Agro-Dealer Project (ADAPT), funded by the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA). ADAPT was designed to provide 91,000 households in rural Zambia with access to an increased range of affordable, high-quality agricultural inputs by developing a network of more than 600 rural agrodealers. Key innovations included establish a mobile payments and e-voucher system connecting agrodealers to financial institutions; supporting cross-subsidizing business models to enable inputs access to 'go rural'; establishing demonstration plots using inputs from multiple providers to improve consumer (smallholder) capacity to make informed decisions; and piloting models to go beyond brick and mortar distribution centers through the use of Zambikes and mobile kiosks.
